Robert F. Aiken:
Bob Aiken’s Vermont roots run deep, back to the sixth generation. His ancestors migrated to Benson, from New Hampshire following the American Revolution. Bob finds most of his creative energy in the simple beauty of his Vermont surroundings. Thoughts on his own art tend to be philosophical as well as practical. “In my experience, things and people are seldom as they appear at first. They are multidimensional, contradictions abound. The profound is often reflected in the most common of objects and encounters. Beauty is at once found in the simple and the intricate, the surface and the deep. In my painting, I hope to capture the changing reflections of light and shadow that manifest these qualities. It is perhaps appropriate that my paintings tend to be less than precise representations, but rather rough and impressionist”. Bob has done portraits and illustrations for college and professional athletic publications, for Cornell University, The Eastern College Athletic Conference, the University of Vermont, Brown, the University of Pennsylvania, and Yale, among others. Over 350 of Bob’s pen & ink sketches have hung in the Schoelkopf Field House at Cornell, drawings of the members of the Athletic Hall of Fame. He has also exhibited throughout the state including a solo show at the SVAC. His paintings are part of collections nationally & internationally. Gary Eckhart:
Retired professor of theatrical Stage Design at Fredonia in New York, Gary Eckhart now lives and paints in Vermont. While attending Kutztown University of Pennsylvania he studied drawing and oil painting as part of his B.S. Degree in Art Education. At that time he became interested in watercolor. Upon completion of his degree he moved to the Catskill Mountains of New York to teach and continue watercolor painting. During this time he also developed an interest in stage design and scenic painting. This eventually led to three years of study at Yale University School of Drama where he earned an MFA in Production Design. In 1974 he became professor of stage design at the State University College and began designing for regional theater and opera companies. He continued to develop his watercolor skills through the teaching of rendering and painting techniques for the design students. In 1997 he again took up watercolor with a more serious approach. Form has always been intriguing to Gary, whether it be the large, flat surface of an architectural piece or the intricate, textual patterns of a landscape. Gary exhibits in galleries nationally and has, over the last few years, had work in several national exhibitions including the American Watercolor Society, Adirondack National Exhibit of America, the Pittsburg Watercolor Society, the Niagara Frontier Watercolor Society, where Gary won Best in Show, and the National Red River Watercolor Society Juried Show, as well as The Governor‘s Exhibit in Vermont. Peter Miller:
World traveler and Vermont artist, Peter Miller, was born in New York 1949, and has been painting since 1977. He began his studies in New York City most notably at the Art Students League under Dan Greene and Ray Goodbred (later studying with Robert Brackman and Carroll Jones). Miller’s portfolio consists of impressionist portraits, landscapes and still life, portraying the harmony between composition, light and color. Currently living in Vermont with his wife and three daughters, Miller integrates the surrounding natural elements in his “alla Prima” methods. At the present, working exclusively in oils “en plein air”, he paints with natural light and the composition of the Vermont landscape. Peter follows his artistic instincts on light and composition to expose the inner vitality of his subjects. He brands his work with dynamic light, color and composition evoking a sense of motion, depth and flow between natural elements. He also travels around the country and overseas, painting with recognized artists Robert Gruppe and C.W. Mundy, on location. His work has been juried into national shows including Oil Painters of America and he is a member of the prestigeous Northshore Artists Association. Jack Sabon
Native to Alaska, Jack Sabon, is an Athabascan Indian, now living and painting in Vermont. He graduated from the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Jack’s training at the Maine College of Art, where he obtained his BFA, is evident in his landscapes with their traditional color theory and ground in realism. Mr. Sabon’s subject matter varies widely beyond his native-influences. Some of his works reflect northwestern sensibilities and values of Alaskan art and are more abstract in style. This work tends to be rooted in Alaskan folklore and bear the stamp of the 21st century in which they are created. Many of his Vermont landscapes are realistic and beautifully render rugged terrain. Jack paints mostly with oil on canvas or masonite. He also occasionally sculpts working with alabaster, granite or marble, creating figures based on Athabascan folklore. Jack has exhibited around the country, including the IAIA Museum in Santa Fe, NM, the Red Cloud Heritage Center in Pine Ridge, SD and the Institute of American Indian Arts, also in Santa Fe. He is an award winning artist, with his paintings in museum and private collections nationally.

Phyllis Chase
Artist Phyllis Chase is a plein air oil painter who delights in the adventure of painting on location, whether it be out in the landscape, on a trip to the southwest or Europe, or in a room whose setting captures her attention. Unique perspective and rich color are hallmarks of her work. "I have the idea that I want to record the landscapes we live upon, as well as the interior spaces we live in, in an intimate and emotionally compelling way", says the artist of her work. Well known throughout Vermont, Chase's work has been exhibited at The Vermont State Legislature, and has appeared as the cover for catalogs for both The University of Vermont, and The Vermont Law School. The artist also is a maker of hand-cut silkscreens. She has reproduced the much-loved silkscreen images as limited edition giclee prints, which are available here, at the gallery. Chase is a graduate of Smith College, where she studied art, and has also studied at The Art Student's League in New York, but has strived to develop her own, original technique, and voice. The artist first became aware of her desire to paint as a child, drawn to the color of the Disney animated classics, and the adventure of the outdoor art of John James Audubon, and Claude Monet! As her art education grew, she fell in love with the Renaissance Italian colorists, and Vermeer, Van Gogh, Matisse, and the early 20th century California Impressionists.
